It’s such a sparce county that the officer who pulled me over was the same one who stopped me last month. Except this time he had a reason to write a ticket.

Kinja'd!!!

Image from when I was pulled over in april

Said I was doing 83mph in a 65, to be fair I have no speedo so I figured closer to 70-75mph. Getting pulled over last month was because I have no badges on the car, and because I quickly stopped for a pullout (turbo oil pressure dropped to zero abruptly) No ticket was issued.

Annnnyways, as he was writing the ticket someone was smart enough to pull a u turn across the highway right next to us so the patrol sped off for about 10 minutes. Once he came back I was told the ticket will be for 79mph because it will cost half as much. He was pretty nice to talk to on both occasions and didn’t say anything about the ducting going under the passenger seat or the exhaust, he did mention the cracked windshield but didn’t write a ticket after I noted how low it sits.

My first ticket in two years, hoping it dosent cost a fortune.

Kinja'd!!!

Sidenote: Saw someone pulled over before entering the highway, someone was pulled over in the same clearing next to the highway where I was ticketed, the same officer was ticketing another person as I was re-entering town from the highway. All in the span of 45 minutes, it must have been a day to crack down or something. I mean there’s only so many highway patrols in a county larger than some states so for at least 3 of them to be in a 15 mile radius means theres a reason.

Just an FYI, the Waze GPS app has a Speedo that’s pretty accurate. There are also speedo apps.

How is a debadged car a ticketable offense?

Cell reception is not great in alot of areas and I don’t want to be fiddling with my phone. It’s worth a shot but normally it’s not an issue, I knew I was speeding just not by that much.

GPS speedos on your phone don’t require cell service! I use “speedometer GPS” for Android when I’m on long road trips and want to make sure I’m speeding by a certain amount for the entire highway section lol

I told him that I didn’t put the badges back on because I couldn’t find anything about badges in Ca code, he told me that it’s there just buried. My best guess: it’s centered around the idea that your car should be represented for what it is and debadging would only be done to hide from authorities.

Witchcraft.

I’ll consider a phone mount but it’s still unlikely.

Yes. Did a 4 wheel drift in an Escape on the dirt, pulled a hasty u-turn across the highway, and either had a stern talking to with the Fusion driver or wrote a ticket.

In his words they were,”Fucking idiots” for doing that right next to a highway patrol, I thought it was both apt and hilarious

If your speedo is really malfunctioning you can get that reduced to improper equipment.

The quotas is in reference to that fact that a good portion of the counties highway patrol are in and around 1 small town, pulling over a larger than average number of people. I deserved my ticket, the cop was nice, I mentioned that. I don’t know what tone you read this in but it’s not the tone in which I wrote it

Manual swap makes the speedo impossible, I explained that to him and he was cool about it, said that if it was obd2 than I could read the wheel speed sensor(so he had car knowledge which was nice) We had a little chit chat and hes a nice guy(had a conversation last month too)

It sounded from the way you brought up quotas that you were being belligerent to his presence to be fair.

Like I put before I edited my comment out, he could of gave you the full offence ticket, ticketed for the windscreen, etc...

Sounds like there’s been many incidents on that stretch of road and he’s trying to educate road users and giving a small fine to justify the stop and make what he’s saying hit home when he could of so easily thrown the book at you.

You can have some cars debadged from the factory. There is absolutely no way this could be illegal.

Quotas may not be the word, maybe cracking down? The department is spread pretty thin so when more than a couple are in the same place it raises a flag. And with the department so thin most places that arnt heavily patrolled are lawless(for lack of a better word) , tons of infractions. On this day there were at the edge of the county patrolling two ajacent towns and the highway in the immediate area.

I’m not trying to say I don’t deserve my ticket. The cracked windshield is the officers discretion since it is not illegal if the crack sits below eye level(if I remember properly). Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate a reasonable officer and know how much differently this could have been.

Maybe the post tone is wrong? Writing never has been my strong suit, the idea was to explain what happened. I found some points of it noteworthy enough for a post (Getting pulled over by the exact same officer, seeing 4 police interactions in 45 minutes, the officer being reasonable)

Most badges can only be read from under 20ft away. If it’s about bystanders IDing the make/model that’s completely bullshit.

Fair point, just ‘quotes’ and ‘cracking download’ are two very different implications. Quotas implies they are only there to catch easy pickings and generate money, cracking down, acknowledges that there is a problem and they are actively trying to correct it.

Some police forces that are spread thin may tackle a certain hotshot for a day or two, then move to the next.

The fact the officer was so lenient implies he’s trying to educate than just punish. He’ll still need to write a ticket otherwise when his senior officer comes to him or local community liaison person or councillor, asks what he’s been doing, he’ll have nothing to show and won’t be able to show that there is a problem on that stretch that may need to be kept an eye on in the future (ie four in 45 minutes).

I’m not an attorney but typically there are case laws against prolonged detentions. Usually if another issue comes up during the first stop, you’d switch gears, go after the new issue and go after the second. I’d think it would be only okay if very short duration or the second issues is related to the first...

I abruptly pulled to the side of the road when the oil pressure dropped(into a large cleared section) he happened to be coming up behind me when I did so he pulled in and turned the lights on.

So not really other than suspicious activity, which is kinda a stretch for pulling to the side of the road.

It’s because the phone uses the GPS satellites to figure out the speed, not the cell service. You could have the phone in airplane mode and it could still tell your speed. It might not be a bad idea to get something like a standalone speedometer app. I’ve got one on my phone called Speed Box and it works well. It also has a “heads up display” mode where it’ll reverse the screen so you can place the phone on the dash by the windshield and the screen will reflect off the windshield to show your speed. It works better at night, but it’s still usable during the day. You can also tap the screen and it will tell you your speed, or you can have it beep if you exceed a certain speed.
